Say ou Tell ?

Say et Tell

On utilise Tell quand il y a un complément d’objet.

Jack told me what happened.

The teacher told his students a story.

‘tell’ rapporte des paroles déjà mentionnées: He told me that I was stupid / 'He said to me' est à éviter, on préfèrera 'he told me'

A noter, la place des complements en anglais, différente du français

Dire quelque chose à quelqu’un           L'enfant a dit la vérité à ses parents

To tell someone something                   The child told his parents the truth

On utilise Say quand il n’y a pas de complément, c'est-à-dire que la phrase ne dit pas à qui on parle.

He came in and said “hello”.

They said that they want to go to the cinema.

‘say’ informe sur un contenu de paroles : 'you are stupid.' / He said that I was stupid.

Toutefois, Say admet un complément avec la prépostion ‘to’ :

To say something to someone

He said ‘hello’ to us.

Mais c’est moins élégant que ‘tell’ mais ça se dit !
